Chinese Zodiac Explained: Find the Right Year Boundary

Bottom line: the Chinese zodiac has twelve animals, but your calendar birth year is not always enough to identify yours. If you were born in January or February, check the date and the method—not just a year list.

Two different animal results do not mean that your identity or future has changed. An everyday Lunar New Year lookup and a BaZi year pillar can use different boundaries. First check which question each tool answers.

Why can two calculators give different animals?

Our animal-and-element checker uses Lunar New Year. Our Four Pillars reading follows the BaZi method described on our methodology page. Compare their year labels with that difference in mind. Close to a solar-term transition, exact time and time-zone conventions matter too; our free BaZi tool does not perform birthplace-based solar-time correction.

A worked example: February 2026

The Hong Kong Observatory's 2026 conversion table lists Spring Commences on February 4 and the first lunar month beginning on February 17: two separate boundaries.

These examples avoid the transition day itself. They explain the method difference, not a personal forecast. For another birth year, use that year's dates rather than reusing February 4 or February 17.

The 12 animals

In order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. The descriptions below are familiar symbolic associations, not measured personality traits or rules about everyone born in a year.

For date ranges and individual animal guides, visit the twelve-sign directory. This page explains how to choose the boundary; the directory is where to look up years.

Why does my animal also have an element?

The traditional year label pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch. Branches correspond to the twelve animals; stems carry yin or yang and one of the five elements. The combined sequence repeats every sixty years, while an animal returns every twelve.

Your birth-year element is not your Day Master, which comes from the stem of your birth day. Read our Five Elements explanation if different element labels have left you confused.

Chinese vs. Western zodiac

A familiar Western Sun-sign lookup uses the Sun's position around your birth date, while this Chinese zodiac lookup identifies a year in a repeating cycle. Neither is a complete astrological chart. A Western natal chart uses more than a Sun sign; BaZi's Four Pillars use the year, month, day and hour.

Your animal is just the start

A year label cannot tell you whether someone will love you, which career you must choose or whether a year will bring money. For relationships, compare actual behavior: consistency, respect and shared expectations. Use symbolism to start a conversation, not rule a person in or out. Our compatibility guide explains this distinction.
